So You Want to Become a Makeup Artist? How to be a Makeup Artist?

I grew up with my doorbell ringing and the sounds of “Avon calling!” …And then Mary Kay moved into the neighborhood. Why I always wanted to become a cosmetologist? I wore a uniform when I attended beauty school. When I took my state board exam and started my cosmetology career, blush was called “rouge” and nail polish was known as “enamel.”  After school I strived for the stars; miraculously I got them. My BIO. How to become a makeup artist? You want to be a makeup artist? Really? In what area of the makeup art industry are you interested in developing a career? Social media will leave you to believe…

    Extreme Glamour Makeup Trend

It’s been over 3 decades that I’ve been setting trends and observing them in the beauty and fashion industry. Recently, I have noticed a movement in glamour makeup. Social media allows people to see inside the intimate details of our lives. The growing movement of selfies has opened a portal into voyeurism. Women’s appearance has transformed – some good, some not. I watch the Facebook and Twitter feeds of fake, unnatural, heavily Photoshopped images of pathetic, overly made-up, fake looking doll-like faces. Does my opinion sound harsh? In retrospect, looking at the art of makeup, it can transform. Yes. However, the glamour makeup has morphed to an extreme glam makeup…

This is the spoken-code professional’s use in the salon. Acupuncture facelift. Asymmetry – A style that is not symmetric. Either side doesn’t match evenly. Here is an  example Back-Combing – A modern term for teasing (without using a rat-tail comb and packing, and ratting the hair down close to the scalp). Finding the perfect hair color is an ever evolving process

Over the last three decades I have had every hair color imaginable. My natural color is brown; to be more specific it’s a medium mousy brown. Well, as the model in the old Clairol TV commercial would say, “Only your hairdresser knows for sure.” Fun to watch old black and white TV ad’s from circa 1957. I must admit, while in beauty school, I even wore green hair. It wasn’t a trend; but a mistake made by another beauty student. Soon after I highlighted my hair, blonder in the front than the back, much like the rocker Debbie Harry ‘Blondie’ in the mid 70’s. As time past my hair became…

    Makeup Application & Technique

Make-up application and techniques for photography are different than make-up a woman wears everyday. Old school photographers know digital cameras are not as forgiving as the old classic 35mm cameras. These are a couple digital cameras used today by photographers. This is a HASSELBLAD H5D-200MS 200 MPX MS DIGITAL CAMERA KIT price tag of  $44,000 and no lens. Hasselblad H5D-60 Medium Format Digital SLR Camera Body  again with no lens. Try a $12,000 Canon EOS 1D-5D Mark III, or Nikon D4, take your pick. Without Photoshop they will never produce the type of results a old Leica film 35mm camera would. This is circa photography before Photoshop, cool old…

Are expensive styling tool worth the money?

There is an old saying “An artist is only as good as his tools.” I am a firm believer there is merit to that saying. Years ago when I was a platform artist setting trends for thousands of professionals I use the most expensive, and very best tools money could buy. Spending a $1,000.00 on a pair of shears, $500.00 on a blower and $250.oo for a brush is over the top, I know, but when I was setting trends all eyes were on me only the very best would do. Since then, I found that expensive isn’t always better, its a matter of preference. Finding the tools that feel…

Best Beauty Products from the Sea

Growing up and throughout my adult life I was around boats and the ocean. Since I was young I was a sun worshiper. Immediately, I learned to respect the ocean, mother-nature and the sun. Sun tan lotion or sun block was always part of my sun bathing ritual. Being a cosmetologist that knows a bit more than the average consumer, I am concerned with toxic sunscreen and its inappropriate use by today’s uninformed consumer. In other posts I guide you through the maze. Things like sea weed, algae, fish-oils, sea sponges is useful and therapeutic for the skin and body. Using natural products are healthier alternative.  Cherie Izzo © All Rights…

What are your feelings about cosmetic/plastic surgery?

Unfortunately over my career I have seen one too many bad face lifts. A woman can have bad cosmetic surgery on her body, and can conceal it with clothing. Bad cosmetic surgery on her face is worn every day for everyone to see, with no way to hide it. With that said, in the last ten years a trend has developed with women using cosmetic surgery a bit too extreme. Cosmetic/plastic surgeons and dermatologist are partially to blame. Their patients lip augmentations are abnormally over blown, and their emotionless faces are pulled unnaturally too tight. An overdone face lift tend to add age to a woman, instead of making her…

It begins with healthy hair and a really good haircut. Healthy hair starts with a healthy lifestyle. Proper sleep, diet and exercise are elements of good health. IZZO Top Seductive Tango Fashions

I dance Tango and love the dance… Tango is a complex, seductive and alluring partner dance. It originated circa 1880 in Argentina and Uruguay. The woman, although she appears to be the focus point, is not. Tango is all about the man. He as a dancer controls the woman’s every move. As a spectator you observe the woman’s body from behind as she is being guided in reverse by the man. The back of the woman is mostly what you see, the style of their hair, dress and shoes are in the spotlight. One of the fun elements is dressing to dance Tango. These are a few fashions and music…

What kind of bobby pins do you use, and how do you use them?

I’m not fond of small plain bobby pins or hair pin. This is a hair pin Diane Hair Pins, Black, 60/card It is not a bobby pin. I’m not the type of stylist that uses a lot of bobby pins or hair pins in up dos. All the same, I do a lot of formal hair but use a minimal amount of pins. I think one of the reasons hair stylists don’t do up dos is they are afraid. Their fear merely comes from placement of the bobby pins. The problem is they use far too many bobby pins and hair pins necessary to do an up do. Goody Styling…

Coffee is a beauty professionals superpower fuel

Growing up Italian-American coffee was a large part of everything. The smell of coffee is a fond memory every time I encounter it. My grandparents, parents and cousins all drank coffee. As a kid, even my younger cousins around 12-years old drank coffee before school. I didn’t acquire the taste until I became a cosmetologist in my late teens. Coffee for a cosmetologist is the fuel for our superpowers… I accelerate the caffeine with dark chocolate. Here are some fun stuff in the life of a hairstylist… that loves coffee and dark chocolate. How do I get the best application of lipstick?

Use a lipstick brush. By applying lipstick directly from the tube you lose control of where you put it. You don’t get the precise coverage you get with a brush. For best results outline your lips with a lip pencil. Then using a lipstick brush with lipstick on it,  apply it to your lips. Start at the center of your top lip and work your way out on either side. Next, do the same techniques on your bottom lip. Then blot your lips with a tissue. Using a lipstick brush to apply your lipstick will make the lipstick last longer and look better. This one is BY TERRY is…

How can I create a poofy bump style?

Over the years it has had many names, tall hair, pompadours, bouffant, puffed out, puffy top, beehive, bubble and it had been called many other terms. To define what I’m writing about it’s the poofy bump. I do feel affection for big hair. I love to create the poofy bump bed head styles as seen on the legendary icon Brigitte Bardot in the 1950’s. There are positive elements to the poofy bump; if you are short you can gain some height with a hair bump, in addition to adding celebrity style glamour. The bouffant bump has been around for hundreds of years. Marie Antoinette brought the exaggerated bouffant coiffure alive…

Budget Hair Cuts? I can’t afford an expensive stylist any other alternatives?

I’m on a budget and can’t afford an expensive stylist to cut my hair every month. Last month I cheated on my stylist and went to a super cheap budget salon and got butchered. Is there a mid priced haircut salon that I can go to? Or are there any other alternatives? A great haircut goes an extremely long way…   Just because the stylist works at a high end salon does not reflect the quality of their work. Some times you can find a great stylist at a mid priced salon. I’m not sure they will be using tools like this Tondeo 9030 Premium Sensation Offset 5.5″ Hair Shears…
