    Extreme Glamour Makeup Trend

It’s been over 3 decades that I’ve been setting trends and observing them in the beauty and fashion industry. Recently, I have noticed a movement in glamour makeup. Social media allows people to see inside the intimate details of our lives. The growing movement of selfies has opened a portal into voyeurism. Women’s appearance has transformed – some good, some not. I watch the Facebook and Twitter feeds of fake, unnatural, heavily Photoshopped images of pathetic, overly made-up, fake looking doll-like faces. Does my opinion sound harsh? In retrospect, looking at the art of makeup, it can transform. Yes. However, the glamour makeup has morphed to an extreme glam makeup…

    Salon Speak Decoded

This is the spoken-code professional’s use in the salon. Acupuncture Face Lift/Facial Rejuvenation – A method of eastern medicine (Oriental) where tiny (hair thin) needles are inserted in the body, face and head to reduce and remove the signs of aging while balancing the entire body, mind and spirit. Acupuncture facelift. Asymmetry – A style that is not symmetric. Either side doesn’t match evenly. Here is an  example Back-Combing – A modern term for teasing (without using a rat-tail comb and packing, and ratting the hair down close to the scalp). The technique is achieved by holding the hair up taunt in a sections. Then in the opposite direction toward…

Finding the perfect hair color is an ever evolving process

Over the last three decades I have had every hair color imaginable. My natural color is brown; to be more specific it’s a medium mousy brown. Well, as the model in the old Clairol TV commercial would say, “Only your hairdresser knows for sure.” Fun to watch old black and white TV ad’s from circa 1957. I must admit, while in beauty school, I even wore green hair. It wasn’t a trend; but a mistake made by another beauty student. Soon after I highlighted my hair, blonder in the front than the back, much like the rocker Debbie Harry ‘Blondie’ in the mid 70’s. As time past my hair became…

Are expensive styling tool worth the money?

There is an old saying “An artist is only as good as his tools.” I am a firm believer there is merit to that saying. Years ago when I was a platform artist setting trends for thousands of professionals I use the most expensive, and very best tools money could buy. Spending a $1,000.00 on a pair of shears, $500.00 on a blower and $250.oo for a brush is over the top, I know, but when I was setting trends all eyes were on me only the very best would do. Since then, I found that expensive isn’t always better, its a matter of preference. Finding the tools that feel…

What’s the secret to a sensational blow dry?

It begins with healthy hair and a really good haircut. Healthy hair starts with a healthy lifestyle. Proper sleep, diet and exercise are elements of good health. Use the proper shampoo and conditioner for your type of hair. When you step out of the shower lightly towel dry your hair. Tenderly squeeze (don’t rub) the excess water out of your hair into the towel. Be gentle with a wide tooth comb Like this one. Breezelike No Static Wavy Handle Green Sandalwood Wide Tooth Comb (7.5 inches) And comb through your hair starting at the bottom and work your way up the shaft to the roots. Don’t start at the top…

What kind of bobby pins do you use, and how do you use them?

I’m not fond of small plain bobby pins or hair pin. This is a hair pin Diane Hair Pins, Black, 60/card It is not a bobby pin. I’m not the type of stylist that uses a lot of bobby pins or hair pins in up dos. All the same, I do a lot of formal hair but use a minimal amount of pins. I think one of the reasons hair stylists don’t do up dos is they are afraid. Their fear merely comes from placement of the bobby pins. The problem is they use far too many bobby pins and hair pins necessary to do an up do. Goody Styling…

How can I create a poofy bump style?

Over the years it has had many names, tall hair, pompadours, bouffant, puffed out, puffy top, beehive, bubble and it had been called many other terms. To define what I’m writing about it’s the poofy bump. I do feel affection for big hair. I love to create the poofy bump bed head styles as seen on the legendary icon Brigitte Bardot in the 1950’s. There are positive elements to the poofy bump; if you are short you can gain some height with a hair bump, in addition to adding celebrity style glamour. The bouffant bump has been around for hundreds of years. Marie Antoinette brought the exaggerated bouffant coiffure alive…

Budget Hair Cuts? I can’t afford an expensive stylist any other alternatives?

I’m on a budget and can’t afford an expensive stylist to cut my hair every month. Last month I cheated on my stylist and went to a super cheap budget salon and got butchered. Is there a mid priced haircut salon that I can go to? Or are there any other alternatives? A great haircut goes an extremely long way…   Just because the stylist works at a high end salon does not reflect the quality of their work. Some times you can find a great stylist at a mid priced salon. I’m not sure they will be using tools like this Tondeo 9030 Premium Sensation Offset 5.5″ Hair Shears…
